SMS Language or chat was born in order to avoid exceeding the limit of mobile phone messages; for example the 140 characters established by Twitter as the limit for text messages or the 160 characters established by the mobile operators for SMSs.

This so-called “SMS- language” begun from adopting certain norms when shortening messages: the words lose letters, and some words and sentences are replaced by emoticons or small pictures to show how the person who sends the message is feeling. The grammar or spelling is never correct, which can create problems at school.

Theey ar used in electronic communication (internet, e-mail, SMS), in English as well as in other languages.
