    Modal verb is a type of auxiliary verb that is used to indicate modality: likelihood, ability, permission and obligation.

    Some commmon modal verbs are: can/could, may/might, must, will/would and shall/should, ougth to.

    They can´t work as principal verbs and some characteristics that you will study about this verbs are: Modal verbs do not take “-s” in the third person, they cannot be used in the past tenses or future tenses…

    They are always followed by a principal verb in its base form, with an exception: the modal verb ought is followed with a principal verb in its infinitive form
